A herald is someone that is a forerunner or who gives an indication of something that is coming.  The models are committed young musicians, and I want to convey their focus and passion.  I also appreciate the grace and strength of their hands, though some still have babyish fingers.  Their investment in their talents gives us hope for the upcoming generation.

Dramatic contrasts are developed through strong lighting and black backgrounds, reminiscent of the Italian Masters.  The placement of the figure within the picture plane forms lyrical and asymmetrical shapes in the background.  Repeating shapes and angles in the musician and instrument harken to my interest in architecture.

This is not photo realism, which looks two dimensional.  The illusion of mass and depth is convincing.  The textures of skin, hair, fabrics and instruments are of special interest. 

The original paintings, from which these prints are taken, have been, and continue to be, juried into prestigious national competitions.
